Tropical Caribbean Offers a Taste of Jamaica

Sanford’s newest retail store is helping to bring the flavor of the islands to southern Maine. Tropical Caribbean opened in December at the Mid-Town Mall with imported Jamaican groceries, including a wide variety of seasoning blends, soup mixes, canned goods, snacks and drinks. The store also offers produce, frozen fish and meats, and freshly baked goodies. Sanford had 61 new cases of Covid-19 in the week ending January 24, and Springvale had 14, for a total of 75 new cases in our community. The numbers of new cases have now dropped two weeks in a row, after the post-holiday surge. There have been a total of 864 cases of Covid-19 in Sanford since the pandemic began, and 213 more in Springvale, for a total of 1,077. Performing Arts Center Update

The Sanford Performing Arts Center is now in the black, and is in great shape to restart programming next fall, according to School Committee member Paula Cote. Recent postcard mailings, and the “Free For All” series of performances paid for by Covid grant funds, have raised SPAC’s visibility in the community. Learning In a Pandemic: Survey Results

The Sanford School Department recently conducted a survey of parents, students and teachers about their experiences with the hybrid instruction model so far this year. Curriculum Director Beth Lambert presented the results to the School Committee at its January 25 meeting. Parents 38% of Elementary School Parents, 44% of Middle School parents and 63% of High School parents responded.
