Ron Paquin and son Kevin bottle maple syrup to get ready for Maine Maple Sunday, the celebratory end of the sap-gathering season. Ron says this year’s production of 85 gallons is down from his average of 150 gallons. “In southern Maine and New Hampshire, this is the worst season in 30 years. That’s what everyone is saying. It’s been way too warm.” Still, Packy’s Sugar House at 232 Harry Howes Road will be billowing maple-scented steam all weekend long. The sugar house will be open 9 am to 3 pm both Saturday and Sunday and will have plenty for sale: syrup, maple glazed nuts, maple sugar and maple cotton candy. Samples of syrup-drizzled ice cream will be given away.
