by Springvale Library Staff Summer Celebration Joyful faces and dwarf goat antics were in abundance during the Summer Reading Program party on the Springvale Public Library grounds on Wednesday August 18th. The party celebrated reading and the abundance of food raised for the Animal Welfare Society during the reading program this summer. City Council 8/17 Meeting Summary

The Sanford City Council held its regular meeting on Tuesday, August 17. Councilor Luke Lanigan was absent with notice; all other Councilors were present. Deputy Mayor Maura Herlihy led the pledge of allegiance and asked for a moment of silence. The minutes of the last meeting were approved. Council Approves Hiring 2 New Firefighters

The Sanford City Council met on August 17, and in a unanimous vote, approved amending the 2021-2022 Municipal Budget to include two new Firefighter/EMS positions. The funding of these positions was debated at length in budget discussions earlier this year. While they were not approved at that time, a majority of the Council said they would be favorable to adding the positions if a means could be found for doing so without impacting this year’s tax bills. Planning Board Green Lights New Apartment Construction

Sanford’s stock of residential apartments will be increasing in the next year with two new projects which were given approval by the Planning Board on August 18. The Sanford Mill building at 61 Washington St. will undergo some interior renovations, as about half of the first-floor commercial space will be redesigned as 7 one- and two-bedroom apartments. The building owners have had difficulty finding commercial tenants for the space, but the residential units are full and there is a waiting…
