School Naming Process Debated

At the School Committee’s January 4 meeting, the process for giving a permanent name to the Converted Elementary School (formerly the Junior High School) was discussed. The school is currently undergoing renovations, scheduled for completion this summer. During the public participation section of the meeting, Sanford High School teacher Paul Auger said mistakes have been made in the past with the process for naming projects. Enrichment Courses Planned for SHS/SRTC

At the School Committee's January 4 meeting, Curriculum Director Beth Lambert gave a presentation on the enrichment courses planned for Sanford High School/SRTC for the 2021-2022 school year. The courses were originally planned to start this year, but the hybrid learning schedule due to the pandemic required it to be delayed until next year. Sanford’s Successful BRIDGE Program May Expand

At the School Committee’s December 21 meeting, Special Education Director Stacey Bissell gave a presentation on the BRIDGE program, which is now in its ninth year. BRIDGE stands for Building Resiliency, Integrity, Determination and Growth through Education. The program serves Sanford students with behavioral issues or psychological disabilities that interfere with learning. Some students are identified by the Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) process, while others come to the school after being expelled for disciplinary reasons. The School District is still…

Willard School recently ran a contest seeking the best student from each grade level (plus a runner-up) to be the best advocate for service/therapy dogs. Entrants were invited to research the dogs and write an essay on the benefits of dogs in the classroom. The winning entries have been posted on the school department's website at sanford.org/o/willard-school/article/364372.
