School Committee April 5 Meeting Summary

Under public participation, Sanford High School Principal Matt Petermann thanked Sarah Schnell of WSSR-TV for her help in broadcasting a virtual state cheering competition. Read Dogs Help Kids at Willard School

The Read Dog program at Willard School began in January 2021 with six participants.  It now has nine students throughout the day, and all participants have shown an increase in their fluency and accuracy.  One student started in January at a reading level C and, by March, was performing with 98% accuracy at level E. Nicole Chapa, an 8th grade Sanford Middle School student, organized an opportunity for the SMS JMG students to partner with Tara Pierce of Sole Hope to help Ugandans in need. Students worked to create parts of denim shoes that prevent jigger infections in the feet of villagers. School Committee 3/15 Meeting Notes

Construction Update Superintendent of Schools Matt Nelson went over the latest updates on legal issues surrounding the construction at Sanford High School. The School Department has been sued by the contractor, Warren Mechanical, over a dispute with a subcontractor. It will likely go to arbitration. The construction at Pride Elementary is still behind schedule, but the contractor has been asked for a plan to catch up.
