Sanford Rail Trail History

A transportation corridor evolves from railroad to multipurpose trail to linear park  Once upon a time, there was a railroad connecting Sanford and Rochester, New Hampshire. It was started around 1870 and was called the Portland and Rochester Railroad Company. It carried both passengers and freight. 36th Annual Turkey Trot Winners

The Sanford Parks and Recreation Department's 36th Annual Turkey Trot Road Race (5K and 10K) was held Saturday, November 19, 2022, with the sun shining bright. A total of 29 runners came out for the event, from age 11 to 85 and a half. Stephen Emery Eastman Memorial Park Dedicated

The Sanford-Springvale Historical Society had a beautiful sunny day for the dedication of the adjoining park on Saturday, September 17, 2022. A large crowd assembled to hear brief remarks. SSHS President Harland Eastman welcomed everyone to the Park, which was dedicated to the memory of his son Stephen, who passed away this past spring after a battle with cancer. Memorial Gym Back in City Hands

At its meeting on September 6, 2022, the City Council voted to accept the return of the Veterans Memorial Gymnasium to the care, custody and control of the City for non-school use. The building was built in 1949 and remodeled in the 1980s. The Gym will be used for a Community Center run by the Parks and Recreation Department.
