On November 2, Sanford/Springvale voters will elect one Water District Trustee to a three-year term. The candidates are Melissa Alipalo, John Cochin, Jr. (incumbent), and Shawn Parker.
John Cochin Jr. is a lifelong resident of Sanford/Springvale. He graduated from Sanford schools, including Nasson College, and has a Masters Degree from Gorham State College. He taught chemistry and earth science here for 40 years, retiring in 2002, and was a varsity baseball coach as well. He has also worked as a land surveyor, and as a sports columnist for local papers.
Mr. Cochin has served on the board of Water District Trustees since 1978. He feels his background in math, underground geology and chemistry are valuable assets he brings to the board.
He is grateful to have been able to play a role in purchasing land and solving problems with the Water District over his years of service, and proud of the quality of Sanford’s water: “We have as good water as there is in the state of Maine, and we want to keep it that way.” He enjoys working with the management and staff of the Water District.
Future challenges for the board include dealing with the Covid pandemic and all associated regulations for Water District employees. Keeping up with the latest techniques used in water delivery and storage, and making sure Sanford has the best equipment possible are also among Mr. Cochin’s priorities for his next term.
