The Springvale Public Library, in collaboration with the Sanford Springvale Chamber of Commerce, is continuing its popular “Music on the Patio” series this season. The summer event, which began this year on June 28, will continue to entertain the community every Friday from noon to 1 pm until September 6. Attendees are encouraged to bring a chair and their lunch to enjoy an hour of live music in a relaxed outdoor setting.

This year’s lineup is diverse and exciting, featuring a mix of jazz, blues, classic rock, folk, modern music, and a couple of Irish performers. Among the new artists gracing the patio this year is the talented folk musician Jim Sharkey, who will perform on August 9.

Sharkey, a singer-songwriter originally from County Roscommon, Ireland, has made a significant mark in the music scene with his unique blend of Irish folk and Americana. His journey to the United States began in 1982 when he joined the US Navy and served as a photographer for five years on the USS Dixon in San Diego, California before transitioning to a career in television and video production. Over two decades, he worked in California, North Carolina, and Maine, earning numerous awards, including three Regional Emmy nominations. He moved to Portland in 2022.

Sharkey’s music is deeply influenced by both Celtic traditional ballads and his experiences in America. His original songs often reflect contemporary issues and are set against the backdrop of the places he has lived. His discography includes four albums of original songs, with his latest, “Our Old Village,” released this past February.

Known for his gentle, introspective compositions, Sharkey’s music celebrates the unhurried life and the merits of contemplation and remembrance. His performances are not only about the songs but are also infused with Irish wit and humor. He captivates his audience with stories and jokes, making each show a memorable experience.

The “Music on the Patio” series is more than just a concert; it’s a community gathering that brings people together to enjoy the simple pleasures of live music and good company. With four more performances scheduled after Jim Sharkey’s on August 9, there’s plenty left to enjoy before the series concludes in September.

Whatever music you enjoy, this series has something for everyone. So, mark your calendars, pack your lunch, and head to the Springvale Public Library for an hour of musical delight every Friday. Make this a summer to remember with Music on the Patio!
