Sanford High School students who wish to pursue a food-related career, or just improve their own culinary talents, have a variety of programs to choose from. There are regular classes as well as a two-year program with the Sanford Regional Technical Center that aims to provide an in-depth insight into the world of fine foods and culinary practices. Students learn to prepare a large variety of foods, from simple baked goods to entire prepared meals.

Recently, students in the Senior Culinary class participated in a cake making and decorating contest, where groups of contestants attempted to make the best tasting and looking cake. The theme for this year’s contest was horror movies, so cakes were inspired by “Midsommer,” “The Exorcist” and “Saw,” among others. The winning entry, created by Alisa Collind, Lily Sweetser and Abigail and Hazel Bouchard, was based on “Beetlejuice.” Previous years have seen themes such as Pixar movies, graduation, and the Covid 19 pandemic.

The senior culinary classes also provide vital skills for later in independent life, culinary teacher April Camire explained.

“Students should leave my class knowing the basics of all different types of baking and cooking, so they can learn to feed themselves in their adult lives,” she said. This also helps develop skills such as planning, problem solving, communication, and cooperation. She added that students also gain important information about safety and sanitation in the kitchen.

Members of the public will be able to get a taste of culinary students’ skills when the SRTC Cafe opens again during the spring semester. It’s open Wednesdays and Thursdays from February to early May when school is in session. Reservations are required.
