Sanford Mainers Players Rack Up Awards
Several Sanford Mainers players continued to win off the field following the conclusion of the 2023 season.
Catcher and first baseman Logan Poteet recently won the 2023 New England Collegiate Baseball League Rick Ligi Most Valuable Player Award. Poteet led the league in batting average this season, hitting .347 in 101 at-bats. He also led the Mainers in RBI (25) and was second in home runs (3). Poteet was also named to the All-NECBL first team.
Second baseman Devin Bade was awarded the league’s Chris Ashmos 10th Player Award.
According to the NECBL, the award is granted to a player who impacted his team outside of the starting nine, whether it be pitching, fielding or batting. Bade made the East Division All-Star team this season as a reserve while hitting a .279 average. He also led the Mainers in hits (38), RBI (25), and runs scored (24).
Starting pitchers Seamus Barrett, Justin Honeycutt and outfielder Cal Hewett earned an honorable mention on the All-NECBL teams. Barrett started nine games during the regular season and went 3-2 with a 3.23 ERA. He struck out 58 batters over 47 ⅓ innings. According to the Mainers, he fell one strikeout short of setting the single season record for punchouts in a season. Honeycutt went 1-1 with a 1.39 ERA and 27 strikeouts over 38 ⅔ innings in eight starts. The Mainers went 7-1 in games he started this season. Hewett batted .282 this season with three home runs and 13 RBI and led the league in stolen bases with 27 in 30 attempts.
Fall Sports at Sanford High School and Middle School
Fall sports at Sanford High School officially started on Monday, August 14. Athletics at Sanford Middle School will begin during the first week of September.

Registration Open for Grahamtastic Connection 5k Run/Walk
Registration is open for the 2023 Grahamtastic Connection 5k Run/Walk and Celebration, to be held in Springvale on October 15. The Kids Fun Run will kick things off at 9:30 a.m. The start time for the 5k is 10 a.m.
You can register in advance or in person from 8-9:30 a.m. on the day of the race. The registration fee is $20 in advance and $25 the day of the race for adults, $15 for teens (13-17), and $10 for children (6-12). Registration is free for children under five when accompanied by a paying adult.
