Sanford Mainers advance to NECBL Championship

The Sanford Mainers advanced to the Championship round of the NECBL playoffs after sweeping the Vermont Mountaineers on Monday, August 5, at Goodall Park. On Monday night, the Mainers and Mountaineers resumed Sunday’s rain-shortened game in the sixth inning, with Sanford holding on for a 7-4 win.

The teams then played their originally scheduled game shortly after, with the Mainers using a three-run seventh inning to pull away for a 5-3 victory. Caleb Shpur and Erin Sullivan each had RBI singles in the inning.

The Mainers will play for the NECBL championship for the fifth time in the history of the organization and for the first time since 2016. Sanford faces The Newport Gulls in a best-of-three series.

Rachel Smith’s quest to become first American winner at Beach to Beacon falls short

Sanford native Rachel Smith finished sixth in the women’s field at the TD Bank Beach to Beacon 10k road race in Cape Elizabeth on Saturday, August 3. Smith, a 2021 Olympian in the 5,000 meters, stopped the clock at 32 minutes, 35 seconds. She was the third American finisher behind Susanna Summers of Virginia and Emily Durgin of Standish.

Registration open for fall sports at Sanford High School and Sanford Middle School

Sanford High School and Middle School Fall sports seasons are approaching quickly. High school sports start on Monday, August 19.

Middle school sports will start during the first week of school.
