Mainers comeback bid falls short against Newport Gulls
The Sanford Mainers nearly rallied from a three-run deficit but ultimately fell to the Newport Gulls 8-6 in an NECBL baseball game at Cardines Field in Newport, RI, on Monday, June 24.
The Mainers trailed 6-3 after five innings, but an RBI double from Colin Barczki in the seventh and a run-scoring single from Matt Travisona helped keep Sanford close heading into the ninth.
Barczki scored on a fielder’s choice to make it 8-6 in the ninth, bringing the tying run to the plate, but Devan Kodoli struck out swinging to end the game. Barczki finished with two hits and two RBI for Sanford, while Christopher Willis doubled three times.
