The Sanford Spartans Wrestling team added more bling to the trophy cabinet this past week, with a second place team finish in the Class A Maine State Championships at Mt. Ararat High School in Topsham on Saturday, and a first place win at the Duals Championships on Tuesday at Fryeburg Academy.
At States, the Spartans fought their way to finish second in the State in Class A. James Blood won the state championship in his 106 pound weight class, and with a combined team effort, the team lifted the Class A runner up trophy at the end of the night!
In the Duals triumph, Sanford wrestlers, who were seeded #2 in the south division, squared off first against #3 north seed Camden Hills. After winning that contest, they then faced Noble High School, and finally beat Kennebunk by a score of 57-27 to become the State Dual Champions.
They celebrated their Duals win with a “victory lap” around town as their bus returned home on Tuesday evening.
The Spartan wrestlers’ next challenge will be at the New England Qualifiers on Saturday, February 26 at Morse High School in Bath. Good luck – although we don’t think you’ll need it!
