SMS class’s creativity earns them special recognition on CNN: Mr. Kumka’s social studies class at Sanford Middle School got a special shoutout from CNN10, a national news show for middle and high school students. The class created a unique drone photo spelling out CNN10 anchor Coy Wire’s name and sent him a student-signed Sanford jersey. The class starts each day with CNN10 to study current events and geography.

Pinkies out, children: Etiquette and gratitude came alive at Carl J. Lamb Elementary School last month when Mrs. Lieske’s students mastered the art of gracious dining, from perfect place settings to welcoming guests with warm smiles. The highlight was a feast where students put their new skills into action. Down the hall, the holiday spirit spread as students of Mrs. McCoy, Mrs. Stanton, and Mrs. Giordano joined together for their own festive Thanksgiving celebration.

Helping others see the light: This month, the Civil Rights Team at Sanford High School has its sights set on recognizing the various celebrations of light across different cultures all around the world. Some holidays are specific to a single religion, while others are celebrated across cultures. One cross-cultural example involves the winter solstice, which falls on Dec. 21 this year. As stated by the Civil Rights Team, “These diverse traditions share a common language: the language of light. It speaks of hope, overcoming darkness, and finding our way within and without.” The Civil Rights Team is dedicated to helping the entire school community feel welcome, reminding everyone, no matter how each individual celebrates light, to be respectful of all holidays that others celebrate.
