The Sanford High School football team opened its 2023 season with a 41-17 win over Scarborough on Friday, September 1. Jordan Bissonnette ran for three touchdowns, and the Spartans scored 28 unanswered points after trailing 17-13 at halftime. Sanford took the lead for good when Tyler Pitman caught a 38-yard touchdown pass from Tanner McCann to make it 20-17. Bissonnette’s final score of the game put Sanford ahead 34-17 in the fourth quarter.
The field hockey team opened its season on Saturday, September 2, with a 4-0 win over Bonny Eagle.
The boys’ and girls’ soccer teams rolled to 4-0 wins in their season openers on Thursday, August 31. Hailey Tarbox recorded two goals and two assists to help the Spartans take down Kennebunk. For the boys, Gavin Hebler scored twice to help Sanford down Massabesic.
The Sanford golf team is off to a 1-2 start this season, with its lone win coming against Noble on Thursday, August 31.
The boys’ and girls’ cross country teams started their season at the SMAA Relays at Bonny Eagle High School in Standish on Wednesday, August 30. Freshman Isaac Pelletier paced the boys’ team, finishing the 1.7-mile course in 9 minutes and 40 seconds. Senior Caitlyn Hanselmann was the top finisher on the girls’ team, placing 40th in 12:55. Pelletier was the top Spartan again on Thursday, August 31, as he completed the challenging 3-mile course in Falmouth in 19:11. Hanselmann was 18th in the girl’s race in 25:25.
