News Notes: November 14, 2021

Coffee With a Cop: In partnership with the Sanford Housing Authority, Ofc. Brown, Det. Adams, and intern Jonathan Phillips (pictured above) sat down with residents of Sunset Towers to answer questions and listen to concerns. It’s part of the Sanford Police Department’s elderly outreach program. There will be more events like this in the coming months.

Yearbooks Online: Sanford High School Distaff Yearbooks are now available online at the Digital Maine Repository. Thanks to the staff of the Springvale Public Library who uploaded them, they have an almost-complete collection dating back to 1918! Find yours here: https://digitalmaine.com/sanford_yearbooks/.

Coloring Contest: Are you a YMCA member who enjoys coloring? Then enter their coloring competition! The winning artwork will be featured on the Y’s annual holiday card, and the winner will receive a one-month family membership. To enter, pick up a copy of the card at the Welcome Center, and return it to the Y no later than November 26.

Toys for Tots: Need help getting presents under the tree this Christmas? Toys for Tots of Southern York County provides gifts for children ages 0-18 who reside with their custodial parents. The application form can be found here. Please ready the instructions before applying. Registrations (online only) accepted through December 8. Distribution will take place December 17-18 at Curtis Lake Church. Can you donate a toy? Dropoff locations are listed here.

Canned Food Drive: The YMCA Trafton Center starts its canned food drive on Monday, November 15. Easy open cans, peanut butter, granola bars, oatmeal or other easily consumed non perishable items are needed to help stock the Y Community Little Pantry. The Little Pantry is a grab and go food pantry housed at the Trafton Center. Your donations will help those in our community who are food insecure.

Covid Boosters: Covid-19 vaccine booster shots are now available! Anyone at least 18 years of age is eligible to get a booster shot six months after their initial doses of Pfizer or Moderna vaccines. If you received the J&J vaccine, you are eligible for a booster if you received your initial shot two months ago and are at least 18 years old. Boosters are also available at the Vaccination Center in South Sanford on a walk-in basis, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays; and by appointment at Nasson Health Care and other locations.

Bike Room: The fundraiser to equip the Bike Room at Sanford Middle School is at the halfway point, can you help them cross the finish line? SMS has a Bike Club with a group of enthusiastic members riding the fleet that Nasson Bikes has furnished for them. The goal of $1,250 will purchase tools, equipment and supplies for the Bike Room, including bike stands and benches, a crank arm puller, a cone wrench set, a vernier caliper, a vise, and more. If the campaign is successful, the Outride Fund (@OutrideBike), a 501c3 non-profit that works to make cycling more accessible for youth across the United States, will match your donations. Please contribute so Sanford kids can learn mechanical skills, riding skills and life skills. You can donate online at https://www.classy.org/fundraiser/3148316 or send a check to Outride, 15130 Concord Circle, Morgan Hill, CA 95037. Please put Nasson Bikes/Middle School Bike Room on the check memo line.
