News Notes: April 4

The Sanford Emergency Department at Southern Maine Health Care just received a generous donation of 500 brand new plush animals from the University of New England. They will be handed out to sick, injured or scared patients in the ED to help ease the fears of their most vulnerable, and often littlest, patients. Kim LaChance (pictured above) and the United Way of York County helped make this donation possible.

In honor of National Volunteer month, Atlantic Federal Credit Union is celebrating volunteers who help their community do better. Do you support a nonprofit located in Androscoggin, Cumberland, Sagadahoc or York County? Submit a photo that you think captures the mission of that nonprofit using this form . Your submission will nominate the nonprofit for a chance to receive $1,000. Nonprofits must have 501 (c)(3) status to be eligible. Submissions will be accepted through April 11.

Goodall Library is having an Instagram Poetry Contest during the month of April. To enter, first follow @lbgoodall on Instagram. Then, write your own poem, or read aloud a poem that already exists (giving credit, of course). Upload a photo of your poem, or a video of you reading it, and tag the Library or send them a DM. Entries will be shared on their page all month. Three winners will be chosen at random to receive $25 gift cards to the local business of their choice. The contest is open to all ages – kids, teens and adults.

April 7 is The Great American Buy Local Day. The Sanford-Springvale Chamber encourages all local residents to support local businesses. How can you help? Just to name a few ways, have a vehicle serviced or repaired, shop at a locally-owned grocery store, order take-out or delivery from a locally owned restaurant, provide a business a great review on Google, Facebook , or Yelp, order products from a locally-owned business and have them delivered or do a drive-by pickup. Let’s all do what we can to support Sanford and Springvale’s local businesses!
