More Sanford Outbreaks, More Sanford Cases

More Sanford Outbreaks, More Sanford Cases

At his press briefing on Thursday, September 17, Dr. Nirav Shah of Maine CDC announced a new outbreak of three cases of Covid-19 at The Baker Company, a medical equipment manufacturer located in South Sanford behind the Airport.

Additionally, an outbreak of 18 cases at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard includes seven Sanford residents who work at the Shipyard and commuted together. Dr. Shah indicated the Sanford group may have generated the outbreak there.

For the first time, Dr. Shah linked the ten cases at the Calvary Baptist Church to the larger outbreak traced to the Millinocket wedding. While not definitively proven, he said it is Maine CDC’s “working hypothesis” that outbreaks at the wedding, the Church, the York County Jail, and the Maplecrest Rehabilitation Center in Madison are all “one contiguous outbreak.”

Also on Thursday, Maine CDC updated its map of Covid-19 case counts by zip code. With data as of September 13, there are a cumulative total of 81 cases of the virus in Sanford, and 22 in Springvale, for a total of 103 in our community. This is an increase of 31 cases since the previous update. It is not known how many of these cases are active and how many are recovered, as that information is not broken down by zip code. There are currently 156 active cases in York County, as of September 16.
