Memorial Day Schedule

On Monday, May 31, the Sanford Veterans Memorial Committee will be placing wreaths at cemeteries and memorials around the city. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend. The Committee will begin at Central Park at 8:00 a.m. and be at each successive stop about 15 minutes later, so the Riverside ceremony will take place at approximately 9:00 and Number One Pond at about 9:45.

  • Memorial in Central Park, at Main and Washington Sts.
  • St. Ignatius Cemetery, Berwick Rd., at the flagpole. Take the second road into the cemetery.
  • Oakdale Cemetery, Twombley Rd. Turn left at the building, go along the river, cross the second bridge to the flagpole.
  • Soldiers and Sailors Park. The World War I Memorial is a granite boulder with a bronze plaque and flagpole.
  • Riverside Cemetery, Springvale. Upon entering, stay to the right, the flagpole is across from the maintenance building.
  • Notre Dame Cemetery, Springvale. Next door to Riverside. Take the first right, go all the way in. The flagpole is across from the circle.
  • Springvale Memorial at the Gazebo in front of Walgreens.
  • Number One Pond. Halfway between the rotary and the Armory is the concrete launch pad. A wreath will be set afloat in memory of those lost at sea.

The Southern Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery Association has a ceremony planned for 11:00 a.m. at the Cemetery at 83 Stanley Rd. in Springvale. See below for details.
