Sanford will officially kick off the Christmas season on Friday, December 3 with the return of two great downtown events.
The Holly Daze Parade will head down Main St. at 5:30 p.m., beginning from the area of York St. and ending at the Midtown Mall. Santa and Mrs. Claus will bring up the rear of the parade and will stop at Central Park afterward to light the tree. If you want to be in the parade, there’s still time to get your application in to Sanford Recreation. The application form and other information are here, and the deadline to apply is November 24. Let’s make this the best Holly Daze ever!
Beginning at 4:00 p.m., the Friends of Downtown will have tables set up with My Christmas Wish for Sanford cardstock ornaments for attendees. Write on the ornaments what you would like to see in our community, or what you love about our community. The ornaments will be hung on the tree during the event, and collected afterward to aid in planning for Sanford’s future.
Frannie’s Mini Donuts will have a giant inflatable snow globe set up in Central Park which you can get inside to take a festive photo. There will be plenty of lighting for your holiday snaps. Their shop, just across the street, will stay open late with coffee, cider and donuts for sale.
The Sanford Alumni Association’s 3rd Annual Spree of Trees will take over the former Bergeron’s Shoes store at 911 Main St. for the weekend. (Please note this is a change from the location originally announced.) Enjoy free hot coffee, hot chocolate and cookies while you stroll through an indoor forest of decorated Christmas trees, sponsored by local businesses, organizations and individuals. The Spree of Trees will be open Friday, December 3 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., Saturday, December 4 from 10:00 to 5:00, and Sunday, December 5 from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Some of the participating sponsors include Third Alarm Diner, Garnsey Bros., Sanford Games & Collectables, Warren’s Office Supply, the Springvale Public Library, Harry’s and many more. They have 55 trees so far, but more are welcome. If you would like to sponsor a tree, call Theresa Salls at (207) 654-4969.
The trees are not just eye candy – you can win a tree and all the gifts on/under it as well! Raffle tickets will be sold in sheets of 25 for $5 per sheet. Online raffle tickets will be available beginning Monday, November 22 on the Alumni Association’s website at http://www.sanfordalumniassociation.org/. Online tickets will be $10 for a sheet of 25 and you can let them know which trees you want them on.
All winners will be drawn and may pick up their tree and prizes on Sunday, December 5 from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. They will call to inform you and you must answer; they will not leave a message. If they can’t reach you, they will begin to call a runner-up at 7:00 p.m. Final Pick up is December 6th, Monday between 3:00 to 7:00 p.m.; no exceptions can be made as they need to remove all trees in a timely manner.
