Congresswoman Chellie Pingree’s office contacted the Sanford FIre Department (SFD) on Aug. 7 with news that SFD has been awarded a grant through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant program. The grant, amounting to $422,727 according to the FEMA website, will fund 90 percent of the cost for an additional ambulance. The grant helps firefighters and other first responders obtain critically needed equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training and other resources necessary for protecting the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards. In 2024, Maine cities and towns received 13 awards from this grant program.
