Get Ready for WinterFest 2022!

Kids, get out your snow tubes and ice fishing gear – WinterFest is coming! Sanford’s annual celebration of all things cold and wintery kicks off on Saturday, February 19 with the Youth Ice Fishing Derby at Number One Pond, brought to you by Sanford Parks & Rec and the Carl J. Lamb School PTA. The Derby is free and open to kids age 15 and under. Bait and traps will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis. You can register at the event beginning at 7:30 a.m., or pre-register online at sanfordrec.com before February 8 to receive a free hot dog and chips for lunch.

But the fun doesn’t end with the fishing! There will also be a DJ providing music, ice skating at the pond and sledding/tubing at Gowen Park. The CJL PTA will also have a bake sale and raffle, with great prizes donated by Kittery Trading Post. Raffle and Derby winners will all be announced at noon.

The annual snow sculpture contest is your opportunity to get creative in the snow! Call the Rec office at (207) 324-9130 to let them know you are participating, then make a sculpture in your yard by February 22. Get the whole family, or friends and neighbors together and make a party of it! Rec staff will go out and take pictures on February 23 for judging. 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners will receive Walmart gift cards.

Sanford Rec is also running vacation camp Monday-Friday February 21-25 with all kinds of indoor and outdoor activities to keep your kids in grades Pre-K to 8 busy. The cost for vacation camp is $100 for Sanford/Springvale residents and includes a bowling field trip – get more info and register at sanfordrec.com. Sledding and tubing at Gowen Park will continue throughout the week as well.

The recent cold temperatures and sizable snowfall expected this weekend should make for ideal conditions for WinterFest 2022 – hope to see you there!
