Fishing Derbies on Thin Ice

Local ice fishing derbies are a highlight of the winter season for many families – but warmer than normal temperatures this year have led to one being postponed already, and whether any will go ahead as planned all depends on Mother Nature getting the mercury down to where it should be, and keeping it there long enough for a solid surface to form.

The Springvale Fish and Game Club’s Annual Mousam Lake Ice Fishing Derby is the first one up, originally scheduled for February 5 but now planned for February 12. This event is open to adults and children, with cash prizes. Sanford Recreation’s Ice Fishing Derby on Number One Pond is part of the annual Winterfest Celebration. Of all the derbies, this one is most likely to go ahead as the Pond is quite shallow, which means it will freeze more quickly than a deeper body of water. This event is open to kids age 15 and younger, and includes a free hotdog-and-chips BBQ. For all the details, see Sanford Rec’s website here: https://sanfordme.myrec.com/info/activities/program_details.aspx?ProgramID=29802.

If the ice is safe, the Sanford Elks MCCP Committee will host its 13th Square Pond Fishing Derby on Sunday, February 19. No additional information has been released yet. Check out their Facebook page for updates: https://www.facebook.com/sanfordelksmccpcommittee/.
