Sanford High School held its Fall Sports Award Presentations in the Sanford Performing Arts Center on Monday, November 13th, to recognize student-athletes and their teams’ accomplishments and hard work.
Athletic Director Zach Lemelin recognized several student-athletes before handing it off to each coach to talk about their respective teams’ seasons.
The football team finished with a 4-4-1 record this year to earn the No. 4 seed in the Class A South playoffs. Head coach Mike Fallon said one of the highlights of their season was a come-from-behind 21-20 win over Noble in the regular season finale to go to the playoffs.
The golf team went 5-5 and finished fourth in the SMAA. Coach Rossie Kearson said the team earned its first-ever win over Marshwood this season and beat Noble twice.
The boys cross country team finished with a 6-4 record in the regular season, with strong performances in the postseason, according to head coach Nate Smith. The girls cross country team made significant strides in numbers as they were able to score as a team for the first time in three years.
The field hockey team showed vast improvement from 2022 under head coach Marti Kane, finishing with an 8-6 regular season record to earn the No. 7 seed in the Class A South playoffs. The team beat Windham 2-1 in the preliminary rounds of the playoffs.
Boys soccer coach Bill Puffer said his team showed significant strides from the previous season as he lauded his squad’s efforts on the defensive end. Puffer said one of the most memorable games of the season was a hard-fought 1-0 loss to Deering, who would go on to play in the Class A State Championship.
Fall Cheer Coach Catrina Woodard gave out four awards: Most Improved, Most Valuable, Best Attitude, and Most Spirited. Woodard said fall cheer is about having fun, supporting the football team, and getting the crowd going.
The girls soccer team finished with a 9-4-1 regular season record to get the No. 7 seed in the Class A South playoffs. The team reached the quarterfinals of the playoffs and had several highlights in the regular season, including wins over Noble, Marshwood, and Bonny Eagle.
