First Day of School for Pre-K students.

Sanford Elks Bingo, doors open at 4:00 p.m., games start at 6:00. Must be 18 years old with valid picture ID. Face coverings required if not vaccinated.

City Council, 6:00 p.m. via Zoom. The agenda includes public hearings on the plans for the 2022 reconstruction of River St., the proposed zoning change for the former Nasson dormitories property, and a proposed ordinance on the moratorium of mineral extraction lagooning; acceptance of bids for three new Police Department vehicles and a new ambulance for the Fire Department; and other items.

Wednesday, September 8

Design Review Committee, 6:00 p.m. via Zoom. The agenda includes review of plans for a new apartment complex on School and Bodwell Sts., and a new storage shed at the Springvale Library.

Thursday, September 9

Red Cross Blood Drive, 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., City Hall, 919 Main St. Many appointments still available, schedule your donation here or call (800) RED-CROSS.

Friday, September 10

Chip in FORE Charity Annual Rotary/Kiwanis Golf Tournament, registration begins at 7:30 a.m., Sanford Country Club, 588 Country Club Rd. More info here.

Music on the Patio with Louie Coluni, noon to 1:00 p.m., Springvale Library.

Sanford Pride Elementary School Welcome Back Block Party, 5:00 p.m., 708 Main St. There will be hamburgers and hot dogs, games, music, cotton candy and shaved ice. A $5 donation is requested, with a family maximum of $20.

Chili & Chowda Tasting and Contest to benefit Maine Children’s Cancer Program, 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. with Live Auction to follow at 8:00. Sanford Elks Lodge, 13 Elm St. Suggested donation of $10 per person. Buy a $20 Mystery Box and get a chance to win the Grand Prize Box. Entertainment by DJ Dick Fredette.

Saturday, September 11

St. George’s Semi-Annual 50 Cent Clothing Sale, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., 3 Emerson St. They will have a large selection of clothing and accessories for all genders and ages. Proceeds from the clothing sale go to support the Church’s ministries both within the church and in the community.

9/11 Remembrance Ceremony, 9:30 a.m., Sanford Regional Technical Center Fire Service Wing, 100 Alumni Blvd. The Sanford/Springvale Call Firefighters, Inc. are hosting this 20th anniversary remembrance ceremony. David Shain, who was at Ground Zero that day, will be the guest speaker. A separate ceremony, beginning about 10:30 a.m. will be the dedication of the Fire Science Wing, including a monument to all members past and present of the Sanford/Springvale Call Firefighters and Ladies Auxiliary. The EMS training room will be dedicated in the name of Chaplain Nelson Elliot, the fire science lab in the name of Assistant Chief Keith Goodrich and the second floor training room in the name of career Captain Richard Levesque. The event will conclude with a tour of the facility.

Author Talk and Book Signing, 5:00 p.m., Huttopia Southern Maine Bistro, 149 Sand Pond Rd. Jennifer Hazard, author of The Maine Play Book: A Four-Season Guide to Family Fun and Adventure, will discuss some of her favorite spaces in the area and answer questions. Books will be available for purchase and signing. Afterwards, stay for brick oven pizza and drinks from the bistro and bar.

Sunday, September 12

19th Masonic District’s End of Summer Family Outing, 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Holdsworth Park, 278 Main St., Springvale. Featuring a cookout, a cornhole tournament, horseshoes, etc. Bring along a kayak or canoe. All are invited, but a $5 donation is requested.
