A Place of Honor

The Sanford Fire Department hosted representatives from the Maine Forest Service this week, at a special ceremony at the Springvale Station to honor the memory of Firefighter Corydon Goodwin, who lost his life fighting a fire off Twombley Rd. in 1953. Smoke & Fires On March 17, seven units responded to a cooking fire on Whitcomb Ave., caused by someone boiling down maple syrup. The garage filled with smoke but the fire was confined to the container. Smoke was reported on Main St. on March 18, but was determined to be from an outside source. Springvale Firefighter Corydon Goodwin to be Honored

Corydon Goodwin (1886-1953), a career Firefighter Driver/Engineer with the Springvale Fire Department, will be honored by the Maine Forest Service with a ceremony at the Springvale Fire Station, 5 Oak St., on April 20 at 11:00 a.m. Firefighter Goodwin, who served in Springvale for 31 years beginning in 1922, was the first Maine firefighter to die in the line of duty. Fires Sanford firefighters provided mutual aid to Lebanon for a building fire on March 4. Three units responded. On March 10, a fire on top of a kitchen stove on Jellerson Rd. brought five units to the rescue. Fortunately, it was confined to the container. Three reported fires turned out to be authorized controlled burning, while two others were unauthorized. There was one call classified as a smoke scare or odor of smoke. Fires Sanford firefighters dealt with a dumpster fire on Spruce St. on February 17. Engine 2 and Ladder 1 responded. The Department also provided mutual assistance twice on February 28, to Wells for a house fire and to Rochester for a barn fire.
