Sanford’s Newest Library Proves Small is Beautiful

Need something to read? Or maybe you have a book you just finished? DeBe and Tony Nevells have built a new Community Lending Library in front of their home at 81 Twombley Rd. The idea behind it is simple: Take one now, leave one later.

DeBe got the idea from seeing similar little libraries in South Portland, where she travels regularly for her home cleaning business. Handy Tony built it to her specifications, complete with asphalt-shingled roof, and she painted it bright orange so no one could miss it. Other people chipped in to make the little library a reality: Portland Glass donated the window, a friend at Bangor Glass and Graphics did the lettering, and the Nevells’ neighbor Cheryl (former owner of Glassworx) made a custom stained-glass window to decorate it.

The Community Lending Library, nicknamed “The Shed,” is located in a convenient spot right at the sidewalk. There’s plenty of parking in that section of Twombley Rd. (just past Beacon St., across from Roberts St.) Along with books for children and adults, you’ll also find magazines and even a few videos in The Shed. Stop by and check it out!
