Library Corner: Goodall

Wednesday, August 4 at 5:00 p.m., enjoy a summer evening at the Goodall Library for a reading and book signing of Why Longfellow Lied. Paul Revere’s daring midnight ride made him an instant celebrity, right? Wrong! Author Jeff Lantos pulls apart Longfellow’s famous poem Paul Revere’s Ride to unravel how and why he twisted historical facts. Wine, cheese and crackers will be served. Co-sponsored by the Sanford-Springvale Chamber of Commerce.

New Books

Adult Fiction: The Diabolical Bones by Bella Ellis: Also titled as “A Bronte Sisters Mystery,” this new novel adds a delightful twist to history by imagining Charlotte, Emily and Anne Bronte as amateur detectives as well as writers. In this tale, their housekeeper tells them of a grim discovery atop an old farmhouse that belongs to their family – a set of bones bricked up inside a chimney. They investigate in a page-turning mystery that can be enjoyed whether the reader is familiar with the real Bronte sisters’ works or not. If you enjoyed Nancy Drew as a child, you’ll love this story in adulthood.

Young Adult: Lost in the Never Woods by Aiden Thomas: From the same author as Cemetery Boys comes this new addition to our young adult collection. Lost in the Never Woods offers a dark, modern twist on the classic tale of “Peter Pan.” It begins 5 years after a girl named Wendy and her two brothers vanished into the woods near a small town in Oregon. Wendy returned with no memory of what happened and her brothers never returned at all. Now more children are disappearing, and the police want answers. Wendy teams up with a strange new boy named Peter to try to save the day, but things turn out to be more sinister than she could have ever imagined.

Nonfiction: 150 Glimpses of The Beatles by Craig Brown: This new nonfiction book is perfect for any fan of The Beatles who wants a seriously in-depth look at their lives, music, and fans. It provides a mixture of histories, diaries, fan letters, essays, charts, interviews, and stories. It is rather large, so not for the faint of heart, but is a superbly fun read for those who want a fresh set of facts on one of the most iconic music groups in history.

Children: All Thirteen: The Incredible Cave Rescue of the Thai Boys’ Soccer Team by Christina Soontornvat: Though this nonfiction book is in our Children’s Room, it is an interesting read for adults as well. With vivd pictures and a detailed narrative style, it describes the story of the 2018 Wild Boars soccer team before, during, and after their harrowing rescue from a flooding cave. It is a true testament to the human spirit and the facts presented bring a memorable perspective to the whole ordeal.
