School Notes

Project Graduation 2022’s fall fundraiser is in full swing. They are offering fall mums in 9″ pots for $10 each through Estabrook’s. Color choices are Bronze/Orange, Lavender/Pink, Red/Maroon, White and Yellow. Order now for best color selection. Plants will be available for pickup on Saturday, September 18 at Sanford High School. If you prefer not to order online, you can also call (207) 608-9601. Leave a message if no answer, and someone will get back to you to work out a cash/check payment.

The Sanford School Department’s summer programming has continued through the month of July. Julie Williams had several students join her to create their own website. This week she had another group learning how to create their own video games. Middle School Theater Camp kicked off this week with a dozen students coming in to learn more about theater and acting. The High School second credit recovery session wraps up this week as well.  The weekly read-alouds at Carpentier Park have been attended by a small but excited group of students and their families. For those who can’t attend, there are reading activities links in the brochure (tap or click on your grade level) for families to check out.  

Superintendent of Schools Matt Nelson reports that teachers begin setting up their rooms at Sanford Pride Elementary School at the beginning of August, and things are progressing nicely.

Registration for Sanford High School Fall Athletics has begun. Register your kids here to take part in football, field hockey, soccer, golf, cheering, cross country and volleyball. The programs are open to homeschooled students as well. All participants must meet scholastic eligibility requirements, and submit a recent (within two years) physical exam to the Athletics Office. Programs begin August 16.

The Sanford-Springvale Chamber of Commerce has awarded $1,000 scholarships to Samantha Hebert and Conrad Nicely, graduates of Sanford Regional Technical Center’s Academy of Business. Each will be receiving $1,000 payable after they start the college fall semester. Chamber President Rick Stanley reports both students worked very hard on their business plans and really impressed the Scholarship Committee.

Sanford Christian Academy will be having an Open House August 5 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tour the campus and classrooms, and meet the teachers and other students. If you are new or returning in the fall, they will have a selection of used uniforms at a discount. You can bring back old uniforms and swap piece for piece or get swap bucks to use at a later time.

The Knights of Columbus – St. Thomas Council has raised nearly $10,000 to benefit St. Thomas School in the past year. In the photo below, Dennis Breton, newly elected Grand Knight of the Council, and members Terry Sylvanus and Ray Sargent present Principal Jessica Rice with a check for over $3,700 from their recent furniture liquidation sale at the St. Ignatius Convent.
