News Notes: July 25, 2021
Infrastructure Update: The Sanford Water District has completed its upgrades on Railroad Avenue, and would like to thank the residents there for their patience and understanding while the District renewed services and valve boxes in preparation for the reconstruction of the road. Next week the City of Sanford will be grinding and grading the road, so please try to avoid it as traffic will be impacted. In another week or two the Water District will be moving its crew onto Kimball Street, Prescott Street and Shaw Street to perform various infrastructure upgrades in conjunction with the City’s West Side Village road reconstruction project.
Crossroads United Methodist Church will not hold their usual bean supper this month. They are considering a possible return to eat-in suppers in the future, look for more details as they become available.
Sanford native Rachel Schneider is competing in the Women’s 5000 meter race at the Tokyo Olympics this week. According to olympics.com, that event is scheduled to begin Friday, July 30, with the finals scheduled for Monday, August 2.
If you’re planning a summer trip to Funtown/Splashtown or York’s Wild Kingdom, stop at the Sanford Parks and Recreation office first and save! They have discount tickets available for both places. The office is located in City Hall at 919 Main St., and is open Monday and Wednesday from noon to 4:30 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday 8:00 to 4:30; and Friday from 8:00 to 2:00. Cash only. Registration forms are available now for the Kids Out Before and After School Enrichment Program at Sanford-Springvale YMCA. The program is for children in Kindergarten through Grade 6. York County Community Action is participating in a statewide Community Needs Assessment, and is inviting the public to participate in this important project by taking a short survey. The community-wide survey results will help York County Community Action better understand what challenges and barriers people might face in our community. The responses are confidential, and the survey will take less than 10 minutes to complete online. The survey is available in multiple languages. The Center for Grieving Children, which has offices in Portland and Sanford, was the Maine winner of the 7th Annual IMPACT Awards, a joint initiative of the Red Sox Foundation and the Ruderman Family Foundation, which this year focused on supporting organizations whose mission includes raising awareness on the issue of mental health and improving mental health outcomes of young adults in their community. Volunteer Coordinator Beth Quinlan was on the field at Fenway Park to accept the $10,000 award July 22.
