Library Corner: Springvale

This summer’s theme of Tails and Tales provided us the starting point to offer not only a reading program to enhance and support literacy, but an altruistic opportunity for our children and teen readers. This “Scoop for the Pooch” activity entices a child to visit the library on a regular basis. Every time a child visits the library this summer, they can scoop a scoop of dry dog food into the special tube. Each time the kids fill the tube, Loyal Companion in Sanford will donate a bag of unopened dog food to Animal Welfare Society (AWS). It’s only the middle of week two in our program and 3 bags have been donated already! We have appreciated the support and enthusiasm from the businesses that have taken on this cooperative venture. Rohm Innovations in Sanford created and donated the quintessential dog food tube that the children fill.
Other ways that kids and teens can provide service is by making the weekly Take it/Create it craft that are actually toys that are dropped off at the library and donated to the AWS. Teens have been challenged to create coding videos that will appear every Wednesday in July on our Facebook page for Wacky Wednesdays, and also fun sidewalk obstacle courses for kids to enjoy on our back sidewalk. These opportunities earn high school students community service hours. It’s a win-win!
Finding Science in Folktales is on July 12th. Pick up a kit at the library and follow along with the videos created by the Children’s Museum of Dover, NH. Hurry in for your kit while supplies last.
Our Mysteries by Maine Authors series is continuing. Matt Cost will be here at the Library on July 29 at 6:00 p.m. to talk about his book Mainely Power. The full list of book discussions and events are on our website.
Knitting With Dawn is back in person again, every Tuesday from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. in the front room. Any handcrafters are welcome.
Our annual Book Sale will be held Friday, September 17 and Saturday, September 18. Stay tuned for more details. We are running out of storage space for book sale donations! Because of this, we ask that donations be books published in the last 5-7 years. After the sale, we will begin accepting all gently used book donations again for next year’s sale.
New books this week at SPL:
Fiction: Survive the Night – Riley Sager. “It’s November 1991. George H. W. Bush is in the White House, Nirvana’s in the tape deck, and movie-obsessed college student Charlie Jordan is in a car with a man who might be a serial killer.” From cover. Another great psychological thriller by one of the best.
Non-Fiction: Maine Quilts: 250 Years of Comfort and Community – Lauren LaBar. A beautiful, fabulous book, full of so much of the history of quilting in Maine.
Young Adult: Cut Off by Adrianne Finlay. When the teen contestants in a virtual reality show are unable to contact the producers for help, the game becomes a matter of life and death. Suspense, Sci-fi, with a bit of romance for an action packed summer read.
Children’s Picture book: If you come to Earth, by Sophie Blackall. Sophie Blackall has created a glorious guide to our home planet. Far more than a simple compendium, it is a call for us to take care of both Earth and each other. (from book flap)
