Library Corner: Mask Free, Fine Free & New Books at Goodall

Goodall Library is now fine-free forever! For the past year of the pandemic, the Library suspended late fees. To thank patrons and best serve the community, they will never charge a late fee again.

Goodall Library is also mask-free now too, although masks are still encouraged inside for unvaccinated individuals. At Springvale Library, masks are still required at this time for the unvaccinated and children ages 2-12.

Jim Cruise, The Spoon Man, will be coming to Goodall Library (virtually) as part of their Tails & Tales Summer Reading Program. He’ll perform his musical comedy show and interactive spoon workshop on Zoom, July 1 from 11:00 a.m. to noon. Check out his website at getspooned.com for more info.

Goodall Library has hundreds of new books for all ages ready to become your new favorites. Here is what the staff recommends this week:

• The Mist by Ragnar Jonasson: 1987. An isolated farm house in the east of Iceland. The snow storm should have shut everybody out. But it didn’t. The couple should never have let him in. But they did. An unexpected guest, a liar, a killer. Not all will survive the night. And Detective Hulda will be haunted forever. This is the final nail-biting installment of the critically acclaimed Hidden Iceland series; the library owns the whole series so you can read them all.
• How We Live Now: Scenes from the Pandemic by Bill Hayes: This new nonfiction book contains photos and snippets of stories captured during the covid-19 pandemic. It shows the transition to the “new normal” in real time in New York. It is a poignant and profound tribute in stories and images, and is described as “an ode to our shared humanity.”
• These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong: Anyone who is a fan of the works of Shakespeare or the HBO show Westworld likely can tell a lot about this new young adult novel from its title, as the complete reference is “These violent delights have violent ends.” Violence is definitely a huge part of this tale, set in 1926 Shanghai amid a feud between two rival gangs. When a new, monstrous threat affects both gangs, members of both must set aside their grudges and work together to save their city from ruin. 
• Bunheads by Misty Copeland: This latest picture book from Misty Copeland has been a huge hit in the children’s section. It has stunning illustrations and a lot of heart. The story is based on the author’s actual childhood discovering ballet for the first time and working through her nerves to perform on stage. It is recommended for children ages 4 – 9.
