Library Corner: New Books & Summer Reading Program

Springvale Library has some new books to keep you glued to the pages, even on the sunniest summer day. Here is what they recommend this week:

• The Lost Apothecary, by Sarah Penner, is a dark and gripping novel with a tart edge about women struggling to survive in a world built by men, for men. Vengeance is the only way out from under their thumb, but when the reckoning comes no one will save women with as much heart and heroism as other women. Great book for book clubs, lots to discuss!
• On Juneteenth by Annette Gordon-Reed.  An essential, sweeping story of Juneteenth’s integral importance to American history, as told by a Pulitzer Prize–winning historian and Texas native.  Appropriate, as our nation has just recognized June 19 as a national holiday, On Juneteenth is both an essential account and a stark reminder that the fight for equality is exigent and ongoing.
• Eyes That Kiss in the Corners by Joanna Ho, Illustrated by Dung Ho.  This picture book celebrates the special stories and bonds that families have over generations.  A young girl realizes the beautiful traits she shares with her sister, mother, and her amah.  This is a lyrical ode to loving oneself.
• Watch Over Me by Nina Lacour.  This Young Adult novel is a modern ghost story about trauma and survival, chosen family and rebirth.  It’s a quick read that will stay with the reader long after the fog clears.

The Springvale Library’s Summer Reading Program for adults kicks off next week, and the theme is Mystery! Stop by beginning June 21 to pick up your game board. For every book read from one of the mystery categories on your game card, earn one raffle ticket. Complete the entire game board to receive a chance to win the Grand Mystery Prize! The theme was inspired by the Maine Humanities Council’s Mysteries by Maine Authors series happening all summer.
