This report is adapted from the presentation at the School Committee’s June 7 meeting.
Congratulations to Adam McLeod, a senior at SHS/SRTC who was featured in the Maine Sunday Telegram’s “10 Graduates to Watch 2021.” You can access his story at this link: https://www.pressherald.com/2021/06/06/graduates-to-watch-2021-intro/
Digital Design Instructor Anita Lavigne and the Digital Design class were recognized for their work on the tickets and program for SRTC’s Recognition Night. Kudos particularly to Sophia Jenkins, whose design was used on these items and to Ms. Lavigne and Ms. Breton, who worked late hours to layout a significant amount of text for the program.
11 of 16 students in the Engineering and Architectural Design program passed their three-hour certification. They each earned an extra 3 college credits and a total of 18 college credits awarded for two years. YCCC Certificate Programs are intended to equip students who are looking to enter the job market quickly with the skills they need. All of YCCC’s Certificate Programs are “stackable” – designed to allow the student’s Certificate credits to transfer into the Associate Degree program. Many students are choosing this option which allows them to earn the credentials they need to get started in their chosen career field and then complete their degree part-time while working.
The Animal Welfare Society facilitated a Mutt-i-grees Social Emotional Learning program. Some of the 5th grade teachers completed a drive donation for the Kennebunk Shelter.
Math students measured ice cream cones and used their formula sheets to find the area of their provided cone. They had to get the right answer to get ice cream. No worries, everyone was quite successful!
CJL celebrated 30 years with a day to remember! They had a field day, a BBQ, cake, popsicles, and played bingo while donning new 30th anniversary T-shirts made by Kristen Hill. PTA co-president, Amy Sevigny, was thanked for her years of service, along with the other officers and volunteers. Staff members received certificates that recognized their years of service to the school. CJL has four staff members who have been with the school for all 30 years: Deb Smith, Dave Eldridge, Sheila Sylvestre, and Holly Hartley. Mrs. Miliano wrote CJL trivia for the morning announcements for the weeks leading up to the event. Ms. McGuckin’s fourth graders created a beautiful 20 page slide show to help celebrate CJL’s 30th anniversary. Check it out here!
Last Thursday June 3rd Margaret Chase Smith School’s Family Engagement Team in collaboration with the PTA hosted a Family Ice Cream Drive thru. Families were invited to drive up and receive either a cup of vanilla ice cream, chocolate ice cream, or a popsicle. Staff, music and even a large blue shark greeted all the families.
One of the units in writing for 3rd grade is research, and MCS 3rd graders made their topic about baby animals. After completing their unit on research, note-taking, and synthesizing information across informational texts, students spent the past couple of weeks creating a Seesaw Slideshow to share the information they learned with their peers.
As a class they developed the expectations for the slide show including a title slide, table of contents, pictures and a glossary. The design was up to them, and lots of creativity was shown. Last Thursday Mrs. Allaire’s students got to share their slideshows with the class. The students projected their slide shows onto the classroom’s Promethean Board with their iPads while they presented, and even used the classroom’s microphone system to project their voices.
Ready, Set, Go! The students at MCS had a blast Friday as they participated in various activities to support student engagement as well as June’s theme of “teamwork.” Grade levels had the opportunity to visit six different stations (chalk designs, musical workouts, bean bag toss, sponge relay, spoon relay and popsicles & frisbees) that built upon previous skills in PE, Art and Music. The event was organized by Mr. Wilkins, Ms. Tibbetts, Mrs Lewin-Grover, Ms. Hastings, and the Student Ambassadors.
The third graders at Willard School recently wrapped up the character study unit with a Because of Winn Dixie Celebration. During the celebration, the students hung their mistakes on the grade level mistake tree, enjoyed egg salad sandwiches, pickles and some “Dump Punch”. The students also decorated with dog pictures and watched the movie and compared it to the book.
