The Southern Maine Garden Club has been in existence for 25 years and includes members from Sanford and Springvale as well as Lebanon, Acton, Shapleigh and North Berwick. The primary purpose of the club is educational, but it involves social and community service aspects as well. The club meets the third Thursday of each month from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. from March through December. There is usually a guest speaker that provides interesting and informative information, a short business meeting and refreshments.
The club has traditionally planted flowers in the islands in Springvale and at Washington St., at the Goodall Statue, Gateway Park, and Waban. After the plantings, the city takes care of most of the maintenance. We also have a yearly plant sale, which this year will be Saturday, June 5 from 9:00 a.m. to noon on the lawn at Springvale Library.
The Club is looking to increase its membership. If you are someone who enjoys gardening, or who would like to learn about gardening, we would love to have you join our group. Having any knowledge about gardening is not a requirement. While purposeful, educational and fun, being a member of the club does not require an enormous time commitment. Upcoming meetings are Thursday, May 20 and June 17 with the place to be determined. Our meetings are usually at the Springvale Library and we will hopefully be able to meet there again beginning in September. If you are interested or would like more information please email Mary at travilr@metrocast.net. We hope you will consider joining.
