News from Sanford Schools

Carl J. Lamb School

Mrs. Gillis’ second grade students wrote letters and mailed Flat Stanley, plus carted him all around town so that they could read and write about his many adventures.  Flat Stanley was even spotted at the Dollar Tree with second grader Cash Letourneau. 

Margaret Chase Smith School

Fourth grade students recently had the opportunity to zoom with an engineer from Pratt and Whitney. The engineer had the students participate in an experiment with magnets to learn about the power of magnetism and how it can be used to create electricity.

To encourage students who are improving their daily attendance, MCS has started to recognize individual students each morning during announcements.  A HERO is someone who is Here, Every day, Ready to learn and On time.

Sanford High School

Prom is back on this year! It will be held at the High School on May 15 from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m.

Volunteers from Project Graduation for the Class of 2021 have been coming into the high school every month to provide treats and goodies for SHS seniors as a little pick me up, and to help build excitement for graduation on June 9th.  

Sanford Middle School

Middle schoolers Natalie Cain & Shakira Linteau have started a program in which each SMS student will have an opportunity to plant a flower seed which will germinate and grow in the school’s new greenhouse. To celebrate Mental Health Awareness, each class will be able to plant their flowers in various designated areas around the school next month. Growing flowers from seeds represents getting help and brings attention to mental health to help crush the stigma surrounding it. The flowers represent strength, diversity, and resiliency.

Sanford Regional Technical Center

Bath Iron Works presented their career opportunities, virtually, to many SRTC programs in the STEM pathway on Wednesday, March 17th. The presentation also incorporated a presentation from Southern Maine Community College about their three week PAID training programs in Welding or Manufacturing, which offer a guaranteed BIW job interview upon completion. 

The State of Maine Skills USA Competition was held virtually this year during the week of April 5 – 8.  Students from the following programs participated: Automotive Collision Repair, Electrical Wiring, Fire Science and Video Production. A student will also represent SRTC in the Prepared Speech contest. Overall, SRTC had 15 students participating this year. 

St. Thomas School

Congratulations to Connor Rice and Natalie Payeur, St. Thomas School students and first place winners in the Elks Lodge Essay Competition for the state of Maine! In May, both will attend an awards banquet in Waterville to receive their plaques.

Willard School

Ory, one of the service dogs at Willard School that is involved in the Read Dogs program, needs surgery to correct hip dysplaysia as well as torn ACLs in both knees. Jess Jones, an Ed Tech at the school has started a GoFundMe account to raise money for the surgery. All the details are here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/service-dog-surgery-help-ory.
