Latest Covid-19 Stats & Vaccine Update

Sanford and Springvale saw a significant drop in new Covid-19 cases this week, with 16 in Sanford and 3 in Springvale, for a total of 19 cases in our community. Last week there were 57 new cases. Our cumulative total of Covid cases is 1,263 since the pandemic began almost a year ago (1,013 in Sanford and 250 in Springvale).

Sanford/Springvale still leads the state of Maine in total cases per 1,000 residents, with 59.9. Westbrook is in second place with 55 cases per thousand.

There have been 823 new cases of the virus in all of York County in the past two weeks.

The anxiously awaited new vaccine center at the former Marshall’s store in South Sanford will have a soft opening on Monday, vaccinating just a few people, with the official opening on Tuesday, March 2. Appointments will be made through MaineHealth’s system, which can be accessed by calling (877) 780-7545.

Sanford residents have other options for getting the Covid vaccine, too. Walgreen’s is joining Walmart this week as another place to get the shot. Walk-ins are not accepted; you must have an appointment. To schedule an appointment at Walgreen’s in Springvale, call 1-800-Walgreens or visit walgreens.com/schedulevaccine. To schedule an appointment at the Walmart in South Sanford, visit walmart.com/covidvaccine.

You must be age 70 or over to get an appointment at any location, but the next phase, for people age 65-69, is expected to begin very soon, possibly the first week of March.

The Department of Health and Human Services announced on Thursday that next week’s vaccine allocation for the state of Maine will be the largest to date.

As of February 24, more than 15% of all Maine residents have received the first dose of the Covid vaccine, while 7.8% have received both doses.
