SHS fall sports underway as girls’ soccer and field hockey teams win season-openers
Sanford High School’s girls’ soccer and field hockey teams opened their seasons with wins last week. The girls’ soccer team beat Noble, 4-1, on Thursday, September 5, with Ava Hudson, Kenzie Taylor, Addie Fiandaca, and Mollie Puffer scoring goals for the Spartans.
SHS field hockey beat Marshwood 6-1 on Saturday, September 7, behind the strength of three goals scored by Ella Tederous. Audrey Payeur and Olivia Kezar each added goals for Sanford.
The boys’ soccer team tied with Noble in double overtime in their season opener on September 5. Ivo Mpeko tied things up for Sanford in the 69th minute.
The football team lost to South Portland 35-15 at Alumni Field on Friday, September 6. Rhylen Avery and Drew McGrath each had rushing touchdowns.
In golf, Noah Corliss and Braden Barron each shot a nine-hole round of 47 to lead the Spartans against Kennebunk on September 3.
The volleyball team fell to Windham 3-0 in its season opener, while the boys’ and girls’ cross country squads hosted five schools on Saturday, September 7. Caleb Pelletier was the top finisher in the boys’ race, placing 10th, while Annie Stimmell finished 16th in the girls’ side.
