Four rookies learn the ropes at SFD: Four new probationary firefighters with the Sanford Fire Department (SFD) completed their three-week rookie school last week, creating a foundation to build upon as they continue their education and training. This week, they joined their assigned shifts and began working toward completing the many requirements necessary during their probationary year. SFD is pleased with the progress they’ve made and recognizes the exceptional training and experiences provided by many SFD firefighters and officers who instructed the probationary firefighters during rookie school.
Inter-library loan service to resume Sept. 3: Van delivery service that enables the sharing of resources among the state’s libraries will resume Sept. 3 at both Springvale Library and Goodall Library. For the first few weeks, the Maine State Library (MSL) requests that libraries allow only three requests per person so the new vendor selected to make deliveries can settle in and the new system is not overloaded. The interruption in van delivery services occurred when an unsuccessful bidder appealed the state library’s selection of a new vendor, following a competitive bidding process. The service was suspended until the appeal process could be concluded. In the end, the appeal panel upheld the vendor selection made by MSL, discussions resumed with the new vendor, and final arrangements were made to restart the service.
Bank’s philanthropy prioritizes small, local organizations: In July, Partners Bank focused on assisting small but mighty organizations based in Sanford, making several contributions totaling $2,500. The bank donated $500 for the Cruising with Friends Car Show, which took place July 26, to help the Friends of Downtown Sanford with costs since it was no longer free to enter a car or truck in the show. The bank also donated $250 for BeLoved, an outreach of Mercy Chapel, for a community baby shower. BeLoved volunteers collect donations of apparel, bedding and toiletries to help families in need. An amount of $250 was donated to Nasson Community Center & Little Theatre to help with operating costs, and a $1,500 donation was made for sponsorship of the 22nd Annual Randall’s Run, scheduled for Aug. 31, to support the Nasson Gym.

In search of Arsenault watercolor paintings: The Sanford-Springvale Historical Society (SSHS) is planning its next exhibit, which will be a collection of Bob Arsenault watercolors. Arsenault was a well-known local artist who painted many scenes of buildings and homes in Sanford and Springvale. The exhibit is planned to go up at the end of September, but paintings must first be collected. If you have one of Arsenault’s paintings and would be willing to loan it to the museum for one year, please contact Lawrence Furbish, president of SSHS, at lkfurbish@sanfordhistory.org or 207-490-6840.
School supplies are still needed: It Takes a Village 207 (ITAV) has accumulated quite a bit of school supplies, thanks to the generosity of so many donors; however, more is needed. For those wishing to help, go to the organization’s Amazon wish list to donate items, including the 45-piece school supply kit, which ITAV notes is especially helpful.
