High school staff receive training on tobacco prevention: On Feb. 28, Sanford High School staff members participated in a tobacco prevention training session led by David Spaulding and Elizabeth Pratt from Maine Health’s Center for Tobacco Independence in Portland. The presentation focused on various aspects of tobacco prevention, with emphasis on addressing the trend of vaping and nicotine addiction among teens. The training stressed the significance of offering support and treatment resources, including My Life My Quit, which offers a free and confidential way for teens to quit tobacco and vaping. SRTC students learn about career options at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard: Representatives from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard visited Sanford Regional Technical Center (SRTC) earlier this month to engage with junior and senior students about career opportunities in the ship construction trades. The presentation highlighted the diverse career paths available and discussed the benefits of working at a shipyard as well as the various shifts and pay rates offered. Students also learned about a scholarship program, the apprenticeship process and the general hiring process at the shipyard. FMI, visit here.

Author Neal Shusterman, the mastermind behind captivating young adult series such as “Arc of a Scythe,” “Unwind” and his latest graphic novel, “Courage to Dream,” will be at the Sanford Performing Arts Center on April 4 at 10 am for a special event. During the session, which is for high school students only, Shusterman will offer insight into his creative process, inspirations and the journeys behind his popular books as well as do a Q&A and book signing. Two scholarship opportunities for Sanford High seniors: AMVETS Post 3 has submitted an offer of scholarships to Sanford High School. To apply, eligible seniors should inquire with Donna Cormier, School Counseling Department, to obtain an application, or go here to access the document. The application deadline is April 14. No military service connection is required.
