Last year’s Sanford Middle School grade seven students learned about aquaponics and grew several types of produce. More than 250 students participated in the aquaponics program. Students are already making plans on what to grow next year.

Learning a new approach to food production: Science teacher Diana Allen runs the aquaponics program at Sanford Middle School. Last year all grade seven students ran multiple experiments, including testing seed growth with regular and aquaponic water as well as observing and learning about the microorganisms that live in the aquaponics poop tank. More than 250 students participated in the program. They grew basil, beans, lettuce, strawberries, carrots, broccoli and Swiss chard, with mixed success. Students will use a new grow system next year, and plan to expand the basil and Swiss chard with the hope of making their own pesto. Sanford has a U.S. Presidential Scholar candidate: Sanford High School senior Lamar Amoakohene was recently selected as a candidate in the 2024 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. The program recognizes and honors some of the nation’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors. Each year, up to 161 students are named U.S. Presidential Scholars. Lamar is a varsity tennis player and captain of the Math Team. Beyond high school, Lamar revealed in an interview with the Sanford School Department that he is interested in politics and urban issues, so he plans to pursue either political science, pre-law or urban studies in college. After graduating, he might also pursue a law degree, but ultimately, he hopes to have a career as a state/local legislator, judge or urban planner. To read the complete interview with Lamar.

Financial aid is available for college-bound students: Barowsky Scholars is accepting applications for a four-year renewable scholarship of up to $25,000 based on financial need. This scholarship aims to support students residing in the state of Maine who are planning to attend a four-year college obtain their bachelor’s degree. Applications must be submitted by March 15. Information regarding the scholarship guidelines and criteria.

Feedback from recent graduates is needed: The School Counseling department at Sanford High School (SHS) is seeking recent SHS graduates from the past two or three years to participate in a panel discussion. Now there’s no excuse to miss Valentine’s Day: The Landscape and Horticulture Program at Sanford Regional Technical Center (SRTC) is holding its Valentine’s Day Flower Sale from Monday, Feb. 12, to Wednesday, Feb. 14, 8:30 am to 1:30 pm, at the SRTC Greenhouse. A resource to make college costs a little more affordable: Atlantic Federal Credit Union realizes that applying for college is a thrilling moment in a high schooler’s life, but the cost can be a bit intimidating. This year, the Atlantic Foundation wants to help by awarding five scholarships totaling $20,000. To enter, fill out the application form and submit an essay, between 350 and 400 words, bragging about yourself and what makes you unique. Entrants must submit the essay and all documents by March 25. The Atlantic Scholarship Committee will choose the winners after an in-depth review process. FMI and to apply.
