Learning a new approach to food production: Science teacher Diana Allen runs the aquaponics program at Sanford Middle School. Last year all grade seven students ran multiple experiments, including testing seed growth with regular and aquaponic water as well as observing and learning about the microorganisms that live in the aquaponics poop tank. More than 250 students participated in the program. They grew basil, beans, lettuce, strawberries, carrots, broccoli and Swiss chard, with mixed success. Students will use a new grow system next year, and plan to expand the basil and Swiss chard with the hope of making their own pesto.
