News Notes: September 2, 2023

YMCA staffers enjoy the rare opportunity of standing at the bottom of the deep end while the pool is drained and repaired.

Getting to the bottom of things: The Sanford Springvale YMCA pool will be ready for swimmers again on Sept. 5, but for now, the staff is giving the pool its annual makeover. This involves cleaning, repairing, painting and doing whatever else the 44-year-old pool needs. Many staff members, including Executive Director Andy Orazio, have helped with the project. The Y pool is home to the Sanford Titans and Sanford and Massabesic high school swim teams as well as lessons, classes and recreational swimming.

School jobs: Students began returning to classes on Wednesday, but Sanford schools, like most around the state, are still looking to fill many jobs. The district is advertising for ed techs, custodians, kitchen helpers, teachers, substitutes and other positions. Here is a link to a listing of current openings.

Fall schedule returns: The Orange Line, York County Community Action’s free bus service between Wells Beach and downtown Sanford, has gone back to its fall schedule. Buses run every two hours and make several stops, including the Center for Shopping, Walmart, and the Wells Transportation Center. Connections are possible with other lines. Thank you, veterans: All this month, military veterans can receive vouchers for $20 per week at the Sanford Farmers’ Market thanks to the Vouchers for Veterans program. Veterans should bring proof of military service and residency to sign up at the market, presented in Central Park every Saturday from 8 am to noon. Vouchers are good for anything sold at the market, including local produce, locally raised meat, baked goods and some prepared foods and crafts.

Curbside composting: Garbage to Garden, which enables residents to drop off kitchen scraps and receive compost in return, has switched from a Tuesday to a Monday pickup schedule in Sanford. The program lets residents reduce their volume of trash – and thus their need for orange bags – and receive organic compost to improve their gardens. A one-month free trial is available, and then the charge is $19 per month. More information is available here.

Mum’s the word: It might feel early for fall chrysanthemums, but it’s time to order them now if you want to support Project Graduation at Sanford High School at the same time. The sale runs through Sept. 14, with delivery on Sept. 16. Mums are $12 for each 9-inch pot and come in five colors. The order form is here.
