Former Sanford Police Chief Thomas H. Jones, 76, passed away at his home in Farmington on August 19, following a battle with cancer. He served the citizens of Sanford for 13 years, and spent a total of 36 years in law enforcement. He was credited with modernizing the department and building partnerships with other agencies and with young people in the community. Viewing will be held Friday, Sept. 8, from 4 pm to 7 pm at Dan and Scotts Funeral Home at 488 Farmington Falls Rd., Farmington. Anne Marie R. Mosher, 76, of Sanford passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 27, 2023 at Kennebunk Center for Rehabilitation in Kennebunk. A 1964 graduate of St. Ignatius High School, Anne Marie worked in the medical field for four decades. She is being remembered as a loving sister and friend. Jared P. Kenney, 32, died unexpectedly on Friday, August 25, 2023, at Maine Medical Center in Portland. He was born in Biddeford and grew up in Sanford, attending elementary and junior high school here. Jared graduated from the University of Southern Maine with a Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in Sociology with an American Sign Language minor, and was active in the deaf community as an interpreter and advocate. A time of visitation will be held on Saturday, Sept. 9, from 11 am to 1 pm with a memorial service at 1 pm at Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main St. A celebration of life will be held immediately following at the Sanford Elks Club. Rachel J. Buchala, 79, of Sanford passed away on Thursday, August 24, 2023 at Summer Commons. She was a member of the first graduating 8th grade class of the newly built Sanford Junior High School. Rachel was a devout Catholic and communicant of Holy Family Church, where she attended morning mass frequently and morning prayer with the Women’s Prayer Group. A time of visitation will be held on Friday, Sept. 1, from 9 to 10:30 am at Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main St., Springvale with a mass of Christian burial to be celebrated at 11 am at Holy Family Church, 66 North Ave., with burial following at the Southern Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Springvale. On August 17, 2023, Dolly Ann Bouley, 62, of Sanford, fondly known as “Diesel Dolly,” peacefully departed at her residence following a lengthy battle with cancer. Dolly was an embodiment of strength, resilience, and exuberance. Her compassionate nature, combined with her innate desire to help others, made her a beacon of hope for many. Clifford C. “Poppy” Dawson, 89, of Sanford, passed away Monday, August 14, 2023, at his home. As a young man he had the rare opportunity to play for a minor league affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies. Cliff served in the Air Force from 1951 to 1955 during the Korean Conflict as a Military Policeman. He was a Boston Police Officer for 32 years before retiring in 1994. Roland Varney, 89, of Springvale, formerly of Rochester, NH, passed away Thursday, August 24, 2023 at his home surrounded by his loving family following a brief illness. Known as “Sonny,” he was a US Navy veteran of the Korean War, and a member of the Sanford American Legion. He worked for Eastern Air Devices of Dover, NH, for over 40 years.
