International Woolen Could Get Additional Cleanup Funds

Sanford could be in line for additional federal funds for cleaning up the International Woolen mill site, resulting from a recent grant announcement from the Environmental Protection Agency.

The EPA awarded $3 million to Southern Maine Regional Planning and Development Commission, which runs a revolving loan program available to municipalities for assessing and cleaning up polluted industrial sites.

Potential projects eligible for this new funding besides International Woolen include the former site of Prime Tanning in Berwick and other commercial and housing developments in Biddeford and Kittery, according to SMPDC. Individual project awards should be made in six to eight months, according to SMPDC Executive Director Paul Schumacher.
