Upcoming Events & Programs

Fridays in March: Medicare Series: The Southern Maine Agency on Aging will be hosting this program to help navigate Medicare options for people planning for retirement. Drop in anytime between 12:30pm – 3:30pm.

Sat 3/11 @ 1:00pm – 1:30pm: Free Puzzle Exchange: Bring jigsaw puzzles from home to swap for free with other puzzlers. Please make sure all puzzles have no missing pieces and come from a smoke-free home. No donations; trades only.

March Craft Kits: In the days leading up to the holiday, pick up a free St. Patrick’s Day-themed craft kit in the front lobby while supplies last. Take them home to create something fun that may just be lucky, too! Suggested for ages 4 and up.

Thu 3/16 @ 10:00am – 11:30am: Humana Presents “Tech 101” for Seniors: Seniors, we hope you can join us for this fabulous workshop presented by a caring volunteer Humana all about how to make your technology work for you. Bring your phone or tablet, or use one of the library’s laptops, and you will be guided through any questions you have on how to use them, no matter how complex (or not) they may be. Free refreshments will be provided! Sign up by calling the library at (207) 324-4714.

Fri 3/17 @ 11:00am: AWS “Furry Tales”: That’s right, Amanda from the Animal Welfare Society will be back with another furry friend for a morning of stories, songs, and cuddles! This month she is bringing a dog with her to join in the fun, and she can’t wait to help you to learn even more about how to care for dogs as a part of the family. Suggested for ages 3 and up.

Need a space to host a group meeting, homeschool craft party, or study session? You can now book our Community Room space on our website at lbgoodall.org. A digital form will guide you through the booking process, from questions about the dates and times you would like to reserve the space to special accommodations we can provide, including an HDTV for presentations or movie showings. Please note that requests will be confirmed if possible and are not guaranteed at the time of booking. Please also give at least 1 week’s notice when using this form – if you need the space right away, you may call the library instead.

Library merchandise is available for sale at our front desk, including a lot of new items including guinea pig swag! Purchase a canvas tote bag with library guinea pigs Winnie or Wilbur on the front, or a fun dot notebook for drawing or writing that features both piggies. There are also new crew neck fleece sweatshirts with the library’s logo in the corner, new ceramic mugs with our logo, and of course plenty of t-shirts and hoodies available with other colorful library designs on them for all ages. You can pay with cash, check, or Venmo, and all proceeds go directly back into the library to assist with programming.

You can visit our library guinea pigs, Winnie and Wilbur, most Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and alternating Friday/Saturdays in the Children’s Room. They can be a great resource for families who don’t have pets at home, who are interested in learning more about their care, or who simply need to de-stress and soak in their cuteness. The pigs also love to be read to! Check out guinea pig books on display near their habitat. Story Times continue to be held weekly on Tuesday mornings. Baby/Toddler Rhyme Time (suggested for ages 0-3) begins at 10:30am, and Pre-K Story Time with a craft (suggested for ages 3-6) begins at 11:00am. 

Lego Club is also available weekly on Wednesdays from 2:30pm – 4:30pm. Suggested for ages 5-12, kids may drop in any time to build fun Lego creations and put them on display in the Children’s Room. 

Printing Services are available upstairs in our Reference Department. Copies are $.25 cents per page, faxes are $1.00 per page, and scans to email are free. You do not need a library card to utilize our printer or our computers. 

New Books:

Adult Fiction: Joan: A Novel by Katherine J. Chen. Fans of historical fiction or simply of enthralling epic tales with strong, female characters will delight in this exceptionally well-reviewed and well-researched new novel. It chronicles the life of Joan of Arc in a way that breathes heart, soul, and harrowing action into the character as has never been done before.

Young Adult Fiction: The Gathering Dark: An Anthology of Folk Horror by Tori Bovalino. As the title suggests, this collection of stories is perfect for fans of horror and folktales alike. NYT bestselling author Bovalino reimagines classic tales in new and terrifying ways, featuring some that are well-known and some that are more obscure, but equally satisfying.

Adult Nonfiction: G-Man: J. Edgar Hoover and the Making of the American Century by Beverly Gage. This latest biography is full of rich detail, and is one that American history buffs will want to dive into for days. It chronicles Hoover’s life and career in immense detail and is currently up for a number of coveted awards including the National Book Critics Circle Award for Biography.

Children’s: A Rover’s Story by Jasmine Warga. This new junior fiction chapter book is a NYT bestseller and comes from a Newbery Award-winning author, and it is clear why: it is perhaps one of the most moving sci-fi stories since Wall-E graced the screen, following Resilience, a Mars rover who begins to develop humanlike feelings just when he is placed on his most dangerous mission yet. A must-read for middle grade readers and early chapter book readers alike (suggested for grades 3-7).
