Sports Notes: February 19, 2023

SHS Spartans Update:

  • The Wrestling team finished in third place at the State Championships on February 18. All five students who competed placed, including James Blood (State Champion), Mason VanGieson (4th place), James Chaplick (3rd place), Angel Zea (2nd place) and Canton Hill (4th place). Another stellar season for our Spartan wrestlers! The Wrestling New England Qualifier will be held at Camden Hills Regional High School on Friday, Feb. 24 at 10 a.m.
  • On Tuesday, February 21, Girls Wrestling will compete at Wells High School for the State competition at 10 a.m. Tickets are $10 adults, $5 students and seniors 65+.
  • The Girls Varsity Basketball team defeated Noble 53-19 in the quarterfinal game this week. Riley Hebler and Julissa McBarron each scored 14 points, and Addie Fiandaca added seven points in the win. The second-seed Spartans now move on to play #2 seed Gorham in the semifinal game on Wednesday, February 22 at 7:00 pm.at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland. Tickets are available for purchase on site. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students and seniors 65+. Live streaming will be at WHOU Live https://www.whou.live.
  • A huge congratulations to Riley Hebler of the Girls Varsity Basketball team, who was selected to play in the 43rd annual Maine McDonald’s High School Senior All-Star Game!
  • The Spartan Cheerleaders finished in 4th place in the State Championships in Augusta, an all-time high for the team. Congratulations on a history-making season!
  • On Monday, February 20th the Indoor Track Team will be participating in the Class A Track and Field Championships at 12 p.m. at USM Gorham.  Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students and seniors 65+. 
  • Also on Monday, the Class A Girls and Class A Boys Swim Championships will be held at Bowdoin College at 11:00 am. The events will be live-streamed at whou.live.
Spartan Cheerleaders

Sanford Soccer is excited to announce a spring program for U6-U10 on Saturdays beginning on May 6th and ending June 10th. In order to build this program, they need to know how many kids will be participating. If your child is age 5-9 and interested in playing spring soccer please email Jeff Wells at sanfordsoccervplocal@gmail.com and let him know your child’s age and interest.

Sanford-Springvale Little League has scheduled baseball clinics for March 17, 18 and 26 for AAA and Majors teams, and a softball clinic for March 25. The Sanford Christian Academy basketball team is competing in the first round of the playoffs Monday, February 20 in Turner. Go Soldiers!

In a sure sign of spring, the Sanford Mainers‘ office will be open Wednesdays from 9:00 to 4:00 beginning February 22. Stop in to see them at 917 Main St. for season tickets, merchandise and more! They will be open on Saturdays from 9:00 to 1:00 beginning April 8.

Snowmobile trails have been closed until there is more snow on the ground.
