School Notes: November 27, 2022
The Sanford School Committee voted on November 21 to institute a five-block schedule at SHS/SRTC to begin in the 2023-24 school year. The new schedule will include freshmen teaming/seminar, AP classes every other day, and electives for all students of all levels, including enrichments. The decision followed a lengthy review process and multiple opportunities for public comment.
The SHS/SRTC Student Peer Helpers (pictured above) got help from the Maine Army National Guard in readying their Thanksgiving baskets for families in need. The turkeys for the baskets were donated by the Sanford-Springvale Chamber of Commerce and transported from Hannaford to the school by Guard members.

Sanford Middle School 8th graders took part in BioME’s 7th annual ME Bioscience Day on Monday, November 14. It’s a statewide event that aims to get middle school students excited about science and expose them to opportunities to work in a science-related field. Students and staff took a trip across town to visit The Baker Company, where they participated in several activities highlighting the science of bio-containment. The Baker Company, located in Sanford, develops technology in bio-containment and contamination control for a wide variety of applications. SMS students were able to tour the facilities, test some technology and observe a real-world application of science.
The MCS/Pride PTA’s 2nd Annual Turkey Trot on November 19 raised over $6,000 for the schools. The Sanford Fire Department and Sanford Police Department were on hand with a fire truck and cruiser for the kids to explore.
In a recent meeting of Carl J. Lamb School’s Around the World after school club, first and second graders visited Japan. They learned about life in Japan and about the food eaten there. Children were interested in Children’s Day in Japan. They made Koinobori, practiced writing Kanji and got to examine real Japanese coins. The club’s next trip is to Kenya.
Fifth graders at St. Thomas School have been researching the best plants and vegetables for indoor winter growth. They set up a greenhouse and planted a variety of seeds that will be transferred to an outdoor garden come springtime.
Winter sports have started for the Soldiers of Sanford Christian Academy. The JV basketball and volleyball teams are pictured below in recent games with the Lisbon Falls Falcons.
