News Notes: November 20, 2022
November 22 is the deadline to register to take part in the Holly Daze Parade. The parade will at 5:30pm on December 2 at the intersection of Emery St and Main St ending at St. Ignatius St. The Tree Lighting will happen around 6:15pm. The area around Central Park will be closed to traffic after the parade passes until shortly after the Tree Lighting.
Brighten Your Holiday! The SRTC Horticulture program, Plants Plus, will be offering a “Pay What You Can” event on Monday and Tuesday, November 21st and 22nd. They are making floral table arrangements, bouquets and 10″ evergreen wreaths. Select the floral elements and the students will arrange them for you while you wait. Sale will be held at the First Floor Kiosk.
Thanksgiving Trash Collection Schedule: There will be no trash or recycling pick up on Thursday, Nov. 24 (Thanksgiving). Trash and recycling normally picked up on Thursday, Nov. 24, will be picked up on Friday, Nov. 25. Trash and recycling normally picked up on Friday, Nov. 25, will be picked up on Saturday, Nov. 26.

The Sanford High School Band played at the city’s Veterans Day service at the Veterans Memorial Gymnasium on Friday, November 11. The guest speaker for the service was Vice-Admiral George Emery, U.S. Navy (Retired), SHS Class of 1959. He served 33 years on active duty in the Navy and retired as the Commander Submarine Force United States Atlantic Fleet and the Commander Submarine Allied Command Atlantic. Admiral Emery stated he and his wife have a special fondness for the Memorial Gym because that is where they first met in the 1950s. After Admiral Emery’s speech, the SHS band played the Armed Forces Melody, with veterans from every branch standing as their branch’s song was played. This was followed by a wreath laying, rifle salute and the playing of taps by Army veteran Jessica Johnson of Biddeford, who devotes much of her time to playing taps around the state. A little rain didn’t deter the Sanford High School girls from playing football at the annual Powder Puff game at Alumni Stadium on November 13. The boys took on cheerleader duties for the halftime show. The festivities also include a tug of war and a round of Chuck-a-Duck. Senior John Paul Alexandre was crowned Powder Puff King. The event was a fundraiser for Project Graduation.
The Sanford Police Department has welcomed two new officers in the past few weeks. Michael Grenier (pictured below, with Chief Andersen) is well known around town as the former chef and co-owner of the Welcome Home Diner. He also previously worked as a corrections officer for York County. Johnny Narvaez comes to the SPD from Florida where he served on the Seminole Police Dept. as well as the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office. A native of Brooklyn, NY, Ofc. Narvaez is the SPD’s first Latino officer.
York County Community Action is accepting donations of new coats, or used coats that have been washed with no stains or tears. They can be dropped off at the office at 6 Spruce St., Monday through Friday from 8:00 to 5:00. And if you need a coat, you can either stop by, or call the office at 207-324-5762 to see if they have the size you need.
York County Shelter Programs will be distributing Thanksgiving food boxes Monday through Wednesday, November 21-23 at its food pantry at 5 Swetts Bridge Rd. in Alfred, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. All are welcome. Each box includes a turkey, plus all the fixings for a Thanksgiving meal. If you can’t make it to the pantry during those times, please contact Food Pantry Coordinator Mike Ouellette at mikeo@ycspi.org or (207) 391-3125. Please note the pantry will be closed on Friday, November 25.
