Helping Hands: August 14, 2022

Wanda Parent and her volunteers at Stuff the Bus have been working all through the recent heat wave gathering school supplies for York County kids in need. Many, many local residents and businesses have participated, including Matthew H. and Ryan at Wireless Zone, who donated 150 backpacks, and Marc Motors which has donated 200 backpacks. Stuff the Bus has one more drive scheduled at Walmart, on August 20 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Please stop by and donate if you can. The Sanford Elks’ MCCP Committee’s Night For A Cause is coming up soon! Join them at the Elks Lodge Friday, September 9 for a live auction, great pub food and music by DJ Dick Fredette. Doors open at 5:00 p.m. and there is a $15 suggested donation for admission. This is a 21+ event. Proceeds benefit the Maine Children’s Cancer Program. Volunteers are needed for the annual giant book sale at Springvale Library! The Book sale is from 10-3 on Friday, September 23, and Saturday, September 24. Volunteers are needed for a variety of tasks on Thursday, Sept. 22, from 4-7 pm, Friday, Sept. 23 from 9 am-12 pm or 12-3 pm, and Saturday, Sept. 24 from 9 am-12 pm, 12-3 pm, and 2 pm-4:30 pm. Caring Unlimited, York County’s Domestic Violence Resource Center, is facing a critical need for volunteers to answer calls to the organization’s 24-hour helpline.  The Helpline serves as the initial point of contact for many of the 2,000 individuals annually who reach out to Caring Unlimited for information, guidance, support, and safety planning relative to domestic abuse and violence.  This critical program ensures that anyone in need of services is able to speak directly to an advocate anytime, free of charge.  For individuals experiencing domestic violence, the ability to access the Helpline 24 hours a day is essential: survivors often have limited options for when they can safely make a phone call and speak freely with an advocate. Volunteers receive extensive training.
