Girl Scout Troop 2085 from Sanford recently completed a baking competition to earn a baking badge that they designed themselves. This competition, held at the Sanford Elks Lodge, was the culmination of nearly two months of learning and teaching each other about baking. The girls (pictured above) are Girl Scout Cadets in grades 6 and 8.

The girls started this badge with kitchen safety and cleanliness, then learned about the common different baking ingredients. Each girl contributed a recipe and samples of a baked good, choosing something a bit different to show off their skills. The girls then designed their own baking challenge that brought together techniques they had learned. Working in teams of two, the first challenge had each team design a cookie based on a different Girl Scout cookie. The second challenge was a brownie with a secret ingredient chosen by the Troop leaders. Lastly, they baked and decorated cupcakes to showcase their decorating skills.

Several Elk members served as judges in tasting the desserts. The Scouts’ friendly challenge was a lot of fun for the Elks, who enjoyed helping them achieve their badges.

Caylin Marcotte, a Girl Scout Ambassador from Troop 1226, has partnered with the Sanford/Springvale YMCA to provide a free “Little Library” for the community to enjoy. Caylin is a Junior at Wells High School and has been a Girl Scout since Kindergarten. She has enjoyed the trips and opportunities scouting has presented, as well as the variety of community projects.

Sanford-Springvale YMCA’s Director of Healthy Living, Merilee Perkins (L) joins Caylin Marcotte and her mother, Casey (R), to officially open the Free Little Library at the Y.
